Top 10 Players in the League, Period

One and two are probably obvious to you if you, well, have a passing knowledge of football. After that it's pretty subjective, so here's the criteria I'm using (in no particular order or weight): value to team, youth, contract, and potential/upside. By value to team, I mean how many fewer games the team would win if an average player replaced him. I also went for a diversity of positions, so there wouldn't be 6 QBs here. Anyways here it is. Oh, and please let me know how stupid I am through the comments.

The Philly fans in the yard will be here to complain about Westbrook only being #8. They should begin in 3. . . 2. . . 1. . .

Sorry, but I can't justify putting a running back higher than that, even if he is Brian Westbrook (in my opinion the best back in the league).

Hey I don't care, I actually agree with you, I was just saying, the Eagles fans will take offense.

i was about to prove your point about the eagles fans until i read the rest of the list. it makes sense. as fa as that list goes its a good one

*far

....uuummm.... where is brian dawkins......????

Probably close to a retirement home about now.

hahah, in the training room

No Ed Reed? You're kidding me, right?

Now there is a valid point! I think Bob Sanders is overrated from their playoff run a couple years ago.

Bob Sanders was just the DPOY last year. Going by that, he should be the best defensive player on the list.

Ed Reed and Dawkins would have made this list 2-3 years ago...they're both past their primes and neither deserves to be on the list this year.

Ed Reed is 29, going to be 30. Send him out to pasture!

haha, sarcasm is fun...

Champ shouldn't be that high on the list if on it at all...he's still a great player but nowhere near what he used to be.

champ should not be on the list....

I actually like the walter jones pick.. arguably the best Player at one of the most important positions in the game.

I really wanted to put Reed on the list, but couldn't justify him over Sanders because of what both mean to their teams. While the Ravens have stars all over the place (Ray Lewis, Chris McAllister, Terrell Suggs) the Colts are very reliant on Sanders' play. When he's out of the game, their run defense is almost 2 YPC worse, which can probably not be said about any other player in the league.

chump bailey should not be on there.......he's past his prime............i can't wait to see him get burned by Javon " what happens in Vegas" Walker

haha grindtime, i sure hope so

totally agree, hes solid but nothin close to what he was.

also, to the list maker: i know ppl gonna have gripes about the list in general, but considering how important it is to have a good running back and considering they have a shorter window to be great in the nfl, how come youre reluctant to consider them in your group of "greatest players"?

I like the list, but I think Sanders should be a little higher, and Dwight Freeney may need to be on the list also. I also do not think that Champ should be that high and another guy that needs warrent is Polamalu. These are just my opinions. I'm just wondering who else was in consideration for you, LT, AP, and others? Thanks

My thoughts on those that didn't make my list:
Dwight Freeney - A great pass rusher who really helps the defense when he's on the field. When he was injured last year, the pass rush took a big step back. I just don't think he's as good as Jared Allen or Osi Umenyiora, and Mario Williams is getting up there as well.
LT - Didn't make the cut because I'm not sure how much longer he can keep it up, especially without Michael Turner to spell him.
AP - Still an unknown. Upside is enormous, but his upright running style means his career may well be over in three years.

Also a lot of people have been saying Champ shouldn't have been that high, and I think there are some valid points. Think about this, though: he has had three seasons with 20 or more pass deflections. Deion Sanders never had one. Champ also plays stellar run support, something very few corners are good at. When he's on, he can essentially make it a game of 10-on-10 without the offense's best receiver, which is a huge advantage for any defense.

I don't understand how u put jared allen up so high cuz he was 32nd the year before with only 7.5 sacks. and who knows how important he really will become to the vikings sucess. I think its a little premature to to put him so high since he hasn't always produced ridiculous sack numbers.

champ is awesome, but pass deflections isn't much of an indicator of how good a corner is in my opinion. The more times a player is thrown at, the more pass deflections he's going to get. The more he is thrown at, presumably, the worse he is as a defensive back. Sanders never had a 20 deflection season because nobody would throw at him.

That said, Champ's the best or close to the best corner in the game, so I don't really have beef with him being on the list.

How are you not going to have LT up there?

Randy Moss can't do anything without a QB that can throw a deep ball, and Walter Jones hasn't been the same since Steve Hutchinson left.

A RB can't do anything without a O-Line, a QB can't do anything without a line, a RB needs a QB to take the pressure off and vice versa. All positions depend on other positions. Moss is much better than anyone at his position right now, I think Moss should be higher.

Almost any running back can be good if you have a good enough line, if Pierre Thomas can go out and have a 100 yard game i think many players can.

Walter Jones has been good before and after Hutchinson left. Take one look at immobile Hasselbeck's numbers last season.

Also, take a look at the Seahawks run game last year.

Hard for a running game to be good when Maurice Morris is your best healthy back...

Almost any running back can be good if you have a good enough line, if Pierre Thomas can go out and have a 100 yard game i think many players can.

Well, Bush sure couldn't make it work with that line last year. I'm not ready to draw any conclusions from one 100 yard game.

Apparently someone found this post (on my site) and posted to the Foxsports front page (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl), as "Ten who mean the most to their teams." Thanks to whoever did that, I'm not sure how those things work.

these lists are unreal....im a huge eagles fan and i think westbrook deserves to be on there....but LT isnt on there? how bout haynesworth why is he so high.....demarcus ware is good but i dont know if hes one of the best players in the league....there are better players at his position

@Demarcus Ware: name a better OLB in this league. Adalius Thomas a year ago, maybe, we'll see if he returns to form this year. Shawne Merriman if his career's not over.

I agree with the lisy no complaints

Champ Bailey at #3 is a great pick, the right pick

Except he was being beaten by the likes of James Jones last year. Nnamdi asomugha is more of a shut down corner.

bailey is proven, asomugha is not

Except he has had two great years, shutting down everyone that comes along.

I agree w/ you supercharger. In the interest of promoting charger/raider fan peace - i will concede that LT should be on this list.

Thanks i've always wanted that. lol

I think it's safe 2 say Patrick Willis is the best MLB in the league, and deserves 2 be on the list.

Even though they are my team's cross bay rivals and I can't stand 49er fans. Willis is one of the best LBs in the NFL, guy can cover and fill the gaps. And he hits like a mother...

He's been at it for one year, and he was amazing, but time will tell if he keeps it up. Top-5 LB for sure. What about Brian Urlacher, though?

Agree with rhcp, and tcbailey I honestly dont believe you think Champ should be that high. Albert Haynesworth is as close as unstoppable as it gets on the d line. I cant stand the guy, but he is great. LT should definitely be on the list. It is dumb not to put him on. You dont know how long any of these guys can put up the numbers that they do, and to not put LT on the list based on that reason is dumb. Peyton has an injury, who knows how that will hold up.

Part of not putting LT on the list is that his team almost beat the Pats in Foxborough last year while he was sitting on the bench injured, helping prove my point about running backs. The only back in the league who I think is that indispensable to his offense, especially considering what else the team has to work with, is Brian Westbrook.

you want to talk about valuable players.............how bout steve hutchinson. look what happened to alexander and now peterson that he has him. im a birds fan so this is stictly subjective.

Hutchinson is a stud. Alexander's career came to an end when they shipped Hutch to Minny.

No LT? I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and say you must have forgotten about him.

I see you don't value RB's very highly, but that guy is as versatile as they come, runs for huge yards behind a mediocre offensive line, is a
