Traveling Man

Thanks for the fans who have been showing me support regarding my blogs. They are something really special for me because it's way different than interviews because I can truly talk about things that are going on in my life and that matter to me. Everybody make me feel very welcome in 'the Yard' I'm happy to be part of it and I'm also glad that people are showing me support that I'm not the only one eating fast food. (HaHa) I'm born with very lucky genetics believe it or not, when I was 10 years old, I used to have a six pack of ab muscles. So I can eat pretty much what I want and I'm not getting fat and I stay in shape. However, when I'm going to get older, according to Jonathan Chaimberg, my strength & conditioning trainer, I will probably have to change the way I eat, which makes me sad when I think about it.
After all my celebration in Montreal with my friends, I needed to get out of my neighborhood a little bit to get back in training. So I went to New York and spent four days there. I learned so many new stuff in Muay Thai with my trainer Phil Nurse at The Wat that I'm already a better fighter than I was before I came to New York. To my greatest surprise, I found out that my manager, Shari Spencer, and also my good friend, Steven Friend, were in town for one night during my stay. So I took them out for dinner with Phil & his wife, Crystal, along with two other friends in New York. I ate very good Japanese food at Nobu and also drank Cognac XO Hennessey with my friends, which is my favorite drink. I like to drink Hennessey because it's a good quality of alcohol and if you drink water with it, it won't affect your training the next day. (Well, if you don't overdo it like I did that night. HaHa) Anyway, it didn't really matter because Phil made me sweat it out the next day in training. As you can tell, I really train hard, but I play hard too. Like my old karate teacher used to say be a man at night, but you need to be a man in the morning. So that's why no matter how hard I party, I'm always in the gym the next day. Constancy is the key to be champion and to stay there.
I came back to Montreal for three days before my trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Actually, today I really made a fool of myself. After training muay thai pads & jiu jitsu drills with Firas Zahabi, I jumped in my car, packed my stuff for my trip and I got stuck in the traffic so I thought I was going to be late for my flight. So when I parked my car, I sprinted to the ticket counter and when I got there I was really sweaty and breathing hard with my three big suitcases and I looked like a marathon runner who just finished the race. When I showed up to the counter, the lady couldn't find my name on the list for the flight and everybody in the airport was staring at me. So I called the lady at the travel agency who booked my flight and asked her if there was a problem with the computer or something. To my big surprise, she told me I was not leaving today but I was leaving tomorrow at the same time. So I became so shy & so embarrassed that if I was able, I would have jumped inside and hid inside my suitcase. But like an idiot, I had to go back, walk next to the big line of people and go back to my car and come back the next day. Then I got stuck in really bad traffic on my way back home once again. Me I'm a real professional when it's time to make a fool of myself. I wanted to share it with my friends online so we could all laugh about it and it would make me feel better.
This is my favorite time of training because I'm not training for a specific opponent right now. I'm training to get better at fighting and to add more skill to my game. That's why I've been working with Phil in New York and why I'm going to Brazil to train with some of the best jiu jitsu trainers in the world at Gracie Barra. I'm also going to have the chance to meet some of my friends there. While I'm there I'm going to try to keep you guys posted on what I'm doing thanks, as always, for the support.

I can't wait until you take down BJ Penn again.

George. You keep by far the best blog on the Yard. Thank you so much for promoting Hennessey and I think you need to get Shari to sign you up on a sponsorship deal with them.

Hennessy is the unofficial drink of the Yard. Gotta love the Henny. So smooth. So solid.

Great post! The training is obvious. Have you ever been to Gracie Barra before?

Haha you were one day earlier to catch a flight. Hey GSP what color belt are you in Jiu Jitsu?

Fantastic to get the update, Georges. First you get your car impounded on your way to Vegas, now this... perhaps you should just take a taxi and outsource the stress :-)

Looking forward to your next posting.

Great blog Georges!! Be sure to let us know if you get any good partying done in Brazil.
Keep up the very hard training. You will have lots of time to rest when you are old.

GSP's blog is the best. I like how he's so candid and really gives us a look into how he lives his life. It's very refreshing in this day and age when athletes lives seem to be almost scripted for the camera.
It reminds you that GSP isn't who he is because he was born that way, he is who he is because of hard work.

Great story about the airport Georges, you're a good sport sharing that with us, sounds funny although its never funny at the time :) Good luck with all the training, im sure you'll come up with a great game-plan for BJ, we know he's training hard already but he hasn't fought competition like you have lately, so keep up the good work!
Colin

Admitting you are human makes you so much more lovable. Pretty soon you will have to have a body guard to keet grannies like me away too. I really enjoy your blogs. Reading what you write makes time go so much more quickly. Thanks for your generosity to your fans.

Its not fair! I miss all the parties! Have fun in Brazil..by the way hows the Portuguese coming?

Im always looking foward to your blogs and i really enjoy reading those!
I cant wait t'ill you put that muay thai to good use when you will OUTSTRIKE BJ for a second time.
Anyway keep us updated!

Funny story, I had a similar story only I showed up one day late ...and they couldn't fly me out since it was a tiny little airport in Europe and airline representatives weren't there :( I was laughing though :) so at least you didn't get to sleep at the airport!

Congrats on your fight at UFC 87, fight of the year so far IMO. Truly an epic war!
What were you going to say at the end of the post fight interview when Rogan had to cut you off? (And they wern't just being rude folks, the PPV literally ended as soon as the interview ended, they were out of time.)

Same thing happened to me once, only I was about 7 hours early rather than a day. I accidentally mixed up the the landing time and departure time. Embarrassing stuff happens to everybody though, and I'm sure some people were staring because they recognized you as well. It's never as bad as it seems in your head, know what I mean?

I noticed you using more Muay Thai in you fight with Fitch, so I can see you are improving there. Also, I hope you become a BJJ expert in Brazil and submit BJ. That would be the greatest thing ever!

Always good to hear the "behind the scenes" stuff of professional atheletes... Your definitely my favorite fighter inside and out of the ring. Best of luck with your training in Brazil Georges

Keep up the hard training Georges! I know you have the will and determination to remain champion for a long time. Just be aware of the many distractions of being a champion entails and don't let them take away from your training to remain champ!!! Your a class act Georges, I have faith that you will remain the good guy that you have always been, no matter how long you remain champion. If you are reading this, I want to let you know that I almost got into a fight with some bellegerant dude that was making fun of your prefight attire, by calling you names and making racist Japanese comments about your headband. I took offense to it because I'm a big fan of yours and also I'm of Japanese ancestry. But I realized that he was drunk and is not worth my time or effort. If I could get my GSP Affliction shirt signed and/or some UFC MMA signed by you that would make my day. Is there any way I can get them signed? Can I ship them to your gym or something, with the return package and shipping prepaid?

Good post. Glad to see some longer stuff already.

whats up Rush? i think its great how you make this blog to talk with your fans. Good luck with the rest of your life and career Ill always be rooting for you!

This will be my first comment in the Yard and I have to admit GSP's blog brought me here...So far, this has been a very refreshing look at sports fans. I have been getting pretty tired of all the hate spued all over other sites on the web, MMA related or not. Very nice to see a positive yet opinionated group.

Felicitation Georges, la population francaise au Canada est tres fier de toi. Tu es vraiment un excellent example de ce qu'un athlete professionel devrait etre. Tu as le potentiel d'etre un mega star puis je te le souhaite.

Here's to many more posts...just popped my cherry and I can't wait for more. Cheers.

Like Bees to honey.

GSP rules! The background stories are almost as fun as watching you kick the S$@! out of someone.

Chuck Norris wears GSP pajamas.

GSP is awesome, nice blog.

haha, that airplane story is the funniest. :-) good to see you have a sense of humor. keep up the great work!

GSP! For a guy who doesn't really like flying, you sure do a lot of it! Flights to New York, Minnesota, Rio de Janeiro... And that Rio flight isn't a short flight. I had an awesome time when I went there two summers ago. The women there are GORGEOUS.

Just wanted to stop by and say hi. I didn't know you were on Yardbarker, so I'll keep coming back. Hopefully you will fight somewhere close to New Jersey soon. It's tough watching all of your fights on TV at the local Hooters. I'm looking forward to a possible BJ Penn fight... truthfully out of all your fights, I think he was your toughest opponent. The 2 fights you lost were flukes! Keep training hard and good luck!!!

Great post. I guess the nickname "rush" applies to all aspects of your life! Speaking of Jiu-Jitsu, I heard you were training with Gustavo in Brazil prior to the Jon Fitch fight, and I was certain you were going to put Fitch away with a leg lock but the closest you ever got was towards the end of one round. I came to the conclusion either Fitch still had too much energy or you just wanted it to last 5 rounds to get the experience... Either way, my point is.... LEG LOCK YOUR ENXT OPPONENT. =)

Salut!!
L'affaire de l'aéroport arrive surment a plusieurs personnes haha..mais bon c'est juste le traffic qui est chaint la-dedans.Anyway bon entrainement et bonne chance dans l'avenir!
PS:Sois un homme a chaque matin héhé

WAAAR gsp loooooool just watched ur video with shonie carter at tuf season 4...how hes teaching ya the pimp movee....was hilariousss......much loveeeee

Hey Georges, great blog. Just one question. How many more fights do u have left on you contract with UFC? Would love to see you dominate for many more years to come....

I can't wait to see the fight Jan 31st in Vegas against BJ (rumoured) I will be there ringside cheering you on win, lose,or draw. I have no doubt you will teach BJ a lesson and can only dream you make him tap. I know that's a long shot but that would be the ultimate icing on the cake. Best of luck with your training and make sure you're still having fun. War GSP.

Just discovered your blog today, what a treat!! It's gonna be very hard waiting for the Penn fight, but just a bit easier than waiting for you to fight in Montreal again. Bon vol et bon jiu-jitsu au Brésil. On est fier de toi en calvaire.

2009= GSP KO'S PENN VIA KNEES, HABS WIN THE CUP

Amen to that!

How cool is this...keeping up with the champ...I love it!!

The Boogeyman checks his closet every night for Chuck Norris who checks his closet every night for GSP

Hey Georges ! :) just wanted to say that you a true champ :)

I love your blog GSP!!! Thanks for keeping the fans updated!

alright!.good genetics!.

GSP, you are really unique!
You made me laugh so hard with the airport story!!! as well as "man in the night... man in the morning"!!!
You are always very entertaining in your blogs and your comments in interviews are so out of this world ("to make the buterflies fly in formation" is one of my favorite quotes - so "DIVIN, mon cher ami" and so true).
You are also a true inspiration in MMA sports!
Keep blogging!

We all make mistakes and many of us have made gaffes in public too - so, do not be too embarrassed, it is not worth it.

I want to tell you keep it up so hard with Muay Thai and need more work with your power legs like Mirko Cro Cop and Bas Ruttan.

Hysterical! Your blog is funny and charming. And the amount of training you seem to do is insane (especially when there is Hennessey involved-yick!). LOL :) A champion in and out of the ring.

You know how most people wear a superman shirt? Well superman wears a GSP shirt!! Oh yeah, GSP is that bad!!

WOW this is awesome. First the legend Ken Shamrock and now St Pierre. Hey can you settle the dispute once and for all? We have people saying only UFC can be counted as the legitimate fighting league that has the best fighters in the world, none else, even Pride..What is your perspective?

Great post, the yard barker just got another member.
